Photographing Estella Warren for WMB 3D: World’s Most Beautiful

Alright, I’m just going to come right out and say it: I love my job. When I was kid, I could only have dreamed that one day I’d find myself in a career where I am constantly surrounded by the world’s most beautiful women. With all that said, it’s not everyday that you get to photograph an actual supermodel.

Like most, I had first “known” Estella Warren from seeing her in countless Chanel campaigns, and in Hollywood blockbusters like Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes. My first shoot with Estella was in 2011—when I photographed her for Breast Cancer Charities of America’s iGoPink campaign (read post here)—and we became instant friends. Her stories make me laugh, and on camera she conjures the most striking expressions with seemingly minimal effort—truly a photographer’s dream.

After the success of our first two editions of WMB 3D: World’s Most Beautiful, I wanted to follow up with an unforgettable third issue. I envisioned a bold cover to round out the trilogy, and yet I knew that only an amazing and experienced model could make risquĂŠ look both artistic and classy. Estella delivered on all fronts, and she was charming throughout the shoot, despite the provocative and sometimes painful poses. She was particularly excited about being photographed in 3D.

I’m proud to announce that today, you can see Estella’s cover, interview and 8-page photo feature in Issue 3 of WMB 3D. It is available on iPad, iPhone and on Google Play. There are also a limited number of Collector’s Print Editions available in the Slickforce Store here. (read about the printing process here). I’m in awe of the beautiful work rendered by the glam squad, and I am eternally thankful to Ms. Warren for our most memorable cover yet.

Enjoy!

WMB 3D’s Warehouse Wonderland Makes Sony World Photo 3D Finals!

Breakthrough.

This morning, we were notified that an image from our 3D fashion feature, Warehouse Wonderland, made the finals at the Sony World Photo Awards in the 3D Category. The piece, entitled “Breakthrough,” was featured in Issue 2 of WMB 3D: World’s Most Beautiful in 2012.

This is the second year we’ve been recognized by Sony and the WPO. In 2012, we won the Grand Prize in 3D for our fashion piece, Nuclear Summer, also shot for WMB 3D (See pics from last year’s award win here.) It is an honor to be in such esteemed company as our fellow nominees, and it is a personal thrill for me to see our wonderful art house get recognized for its landmark achievements in 3D photography.

I also must thank our team for helping me create this beautiful image. Fashion model Aryn Livingston graciously allowed me to dirty her up in the industrial warehouse. Genius stylist Monica Rose wowed us all again with her out-of-this-world wardrobe styling. Hair stylist Gio Campora and make-up artist Gaby Ramos Torell—the same glam squad that brought you our globally-reknowned desert shoot with Bollywood superstar Mallika Sherawat, returned to lend their enormous talents and create their signature brand of magic. My thanks to WMB 3D Executive Publisher Howard Misle and the WMB staff, and to the entire Saglimbeni3D technical team, including lead engineer German Pinchevsky, post-production supervisor Joyce Park, production coordinator Kevin Savarese, and art director Clint Davis.

Remembering the Talents of Make-up Artist Kimberly Pletz

I only worked with Kimberly Pletz a handful of times, and yet the images she helped me create remain some of my favorites of my career. You only had to meet Kim once to remember her forever. She was a fireball of energy, with a wicked sense of humor that had you either buckling over with laughter or running for cover. Either way, she kept you on your toes.

Kim provided makeup for three of my first fashion shoots of any note: Skid Row Princess, Castle Diva, and a fashion story featuring model Donna Feldman. Each of these shoots produced images that remain in my portfolio to this day. She created wonderfully smoky eyes amidst striking color palettes, and never backed down from a challenge. She was an artist, a visionary, and a friend. Sadly, Kim passed away earlier this week. I hadn’t spoken to her in a few years, and—as life has a way of reminding you—you often don’t get the chance to say good-bye.

So, my goodbye to Kim is a look back at the work we did together. The world has lost an amazing artist, and—perhaps even more rare—an unforgettable personality. Rest in peace, Kimberly Pletz.

The Making of the 2012 Kardashian/Jenner Christmas Card

Since 2010, I’ve been helping the Kardashian family create their brand of Christmas magic with their annual holiday card. In 2010 and 2011, the family opted for a more dramatic theme, and so I did my best to create that with the lighting, blocking and pose direction. This year, Kim wanted a much happier vibe, something with lots of energy. She also wanted everyone in white.

As any photographer or cinematographer knows, capturing perfect skin tones with white wardrobe usually comes down to a compromise between skin underexposure and protecting white highlights from clipping. However, after years of experimentation, I finally accepted that I just don’t like the way underexposed skin looks, even with exposure levels corrected in Lightroom. When shooting any of my clients, skin glow is almost always my top goal, above even wardrobe.

The three-day mega-shoot spanned the country, beginning in Miami in October and ending in LA just two weeks ago. For my team, that meant tracking detailed setup parameters to insure family members not photographed in Miami could be seamlessly added to the final image.

Most of you who follow my work know that I rarely talk about my lighting setups. This week, however, UK journalist Jon Severs persuaded me to discuss the lighting of the Christmas card, and I went into a surprising amount of detail, more than I ever have before. You can read the interview here.

I’ve attached my actual lighting diagram below, please take a moment to appreciate the fine chicken scrawl. And enjoy these wonderful behind-the-scenes images taken by photographers Joyce Park, Scot Fortino and Kate Garfield for SlickforceStudio.

My thanks to Kris, Kim and the entire Kardashian/Jenner family for allowing me to capture the card & help create such a festive moment in their lives!

The 2012 Kardashian Khristmas Card Rings in the New Year in Style

Once again, the Kardashian/Jenner/Odom/Disick family generates record buzz with their annual Christmas card. This year, the card was photographed in Miami at the amazing Temple House. Kim wanted a bright and happy all-white theme for this year’s holiday card, in stark contrast to the dramatic images we shot in previous years. Lots more behind-the-scenes on the way.

Which is your favorite? (Go behind-the-scenes on 2010 and 2011 cards.)

Nuclear Summer wins 3D Grand Prize at Sony World Photography Awards

On Thursday evening, April 26, the Sony World Photography Awards were held in London, part of the month-long World Photo London event at Somerset House. My fashion piece Nuclear Summer (featured above) was nominated in their 3D category.

I always appreciate a good excuse to travel to one of my favorite cities, so I headed to London on Tuesday to show support for both the event and our nomination. All of the nominees’ work for all of the categories was displayed at Somerset House, in a remarkable gallery exhibition. It was thrilling to see so much amazing work from so many talented and varied artists. (My particular favorite was Mitch Dobrowner’s stunning black-and-white storm photography, which ultimately won the L’Iris D’or prize. Check out his site here.)

On the night of the awards show, the photographers appeared one-by-one in black tie—a stark contrast to the American photography award shows I’ve attended–and celebrated each other victories and work throughout the night. I was honored to receive the Grand Prize in 3D, mostly because it stood as a testament to the hard work of my brilliant Saglimbeni3D team, who has spent the last two years in the trenches with me, developing new 3D cameras and post-production technologies and launching 3D projects such as WMB 3D: World’s Most Beautiful. I’d especially like to thank Saglimbeni3D post-production supervisor Joyce Park, director of operations Kevin Savarese and the entire production team at Slickforce Studio.

My sincerest thanks also go out to Sony and the good people at the World Photography Organization for recognizing our work. We look forward to producing many more exciting 3D projects in the future.

WMB 3D Issue 2 Fashion Feature: Warehouse Wonderland

WMB 3D‘s recent fashion feature has readers and artists buzzing, so I thought it appropriate to devote the first Issue 2 post to Warehouse Wonderland.

I’ve always found amazing locations to be fantastic sources of inspiration. When I stumbled upon this forgotten machine shop in downtown Los Angeles, it was love at first sight. The exposed framework, massive steel crane hooks, and natural sunlight would create perfect contrast for a fashion-forward piece.

I re-teamed with brilliant stylist Monica Rose, who did an amazing job of helping me bring our latest apocalyptic vision to life. I also had the pleasure of working with two of my favorite artists: makeup artist Gaby Ramos and hair stylist Gio Campora, who delivered electrifying flair within each frame.

Model Aryn Livingston handled the complex shoot like a champ, never complaining as we had her climb ladders, lie on cold metal, or precariously walk an elevated girder (in heels!)

The unique layout of the warehouse also created several unique shooting situations, including multi-level landing camera setups. For many shots, we redirected tiny pools of sunlight using multiple mirrors to get the sun to frame Aryn correctly.

Go behind-the-scenes of WMB 3D‘s Warehouse Wonderland shoot thanks to these amazing stills and video from photographer Joyce Park and director David Rivera.
